Your Cosmetics and Personal Care Products - How to Make Sure They're Safe

Choosing safe products can be a daunting task without the proper knowledge and tools. Many product packages are deceptively designed to make you believe that the product inside the package is herbal, all natural, safe and gentle, when in fact the product contains little or no natural or herbal ingredients, is contaminated with carcinogens and is irritating to the skin. This is the case because of the lack of regulation in the cosmetic and personal care product industry. But armed with a little knowledge and some helpful tools, there is much you can do to protect yourself.
Here are ten things you can do to make safer and healthier choices when selecting your toiletries:
Read the ingredients on the label.
The packaging may say such things as natural, herbal or hypoallergenic. This has nothing to do with what's really in the product or how safe it is. Manufacturers make a lot of claims on the package to "sell" the product. They can do this because some of the terms don't have official definitions and they can use them however they want. To really find out what's in a product, you must read the ingredients in the small print, you know, the ones that you sometimes need a magnifying glass to be able to see.
Interpret and understand the ingredients.
Once you find the ingredients, you have to be able to know what they are and if they are safe, harmful, questionable or untested. A great many ingredients have chemical names that only a cosmetic chemist would understand. However, you don't have to be a cosmetic chemist. The book, Dying To Look Good, makes it easy for you to choose products with safe and healthy ingredients.
Choose products without parabens.
Parabens are xenoestrogens or endocrine disrupters. They disturb the hormone balance in your body. They are also skin sensitizers and have the potential to cause allergic reactions. They have been found in breast cancer tumors, but it is not known if they cause breast cancer.
Stay away from products containing amines.
Chemicals that fall into the category of amines can combine with nitrosating agents to form nitrosamines, which cause cancer. Nitrosamines are formed during the manufacturing process when an amine combines with a formaldehyde-releasing preservative. Some of the amines commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products are Cocamide MEA, Cocamide DEA, TEA, sodium lauroyal sarcosinate and amino methyl propanol. Several of the formaldehyde-releasing preservatives include sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin and diazonlidnyl urea.
Steer clear of products containing talc.
Talc is found in talcum powder, baby powder and makeup. It is a carcinogen if it contains asbestiform fibers. The quantity of asbestiform fibers in cosmetic-grade talc is unregulated in the U.S. Some research suggests a link between talc and ovarian cancer.
Be cautious about products that contain fragrance.
Manufacturers are not required to disclose the ingredients used in frgrances. A single fragrance may contain hundreds of different chemicals. Some of the chemicals used in fragrances are hazardous, such as benzyl chloride, methyl ethyl ketone, methylene chloride, toluene and phthalates. Fragrances may also contain chemicals that cause cancer. Even products listed as fragrance free may have fragrance added to mask offensive odors.
Avoid D&C and FD&C Colors.
Most D&C and FD&C colors are derived from coal tar which is a carcinogen. Most coal tar colors are potential carcinogens, may contain carcinogenic contaminants and cause allergic reactions. These colors must be certified by the FDA to contain not more than 20 ppm of lead and arsenic, but the certification does not address any other harmful effects these colors may have on the body.
Beware of products containing chemical preservatives.
Chemical preservatives can be irritating and are the number one cause of contact dermatitis. Some preservatives you should watch out for are benzethonium chloride, BHA, BHT, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, phenoxyethanol and methylisothiazolinone.
Watch out for "and other ingredients."
This means there are one or more ingredients that the manufacturer considers a trade secret and does not want to list on the label. There is no way of knowing if these ingredients are safe or not.
Be wary of products with long lists of ingredients.
Many of the chemicals used in cosmetics and personal care products have not been tested or have not been adequately tested. Even those that have been tested have only been tested individually, not in combination with other ingredients. Nobody knows the effects of the many different ingredients used in thousands of different combinations, the effects of using numerous different products, one on top of the other, or the effects of repeated use of ingredients or products over time.

Green Washing - How to Decipher Personal Care Product Claims

More than ever before, consumers are clamoring for 'greener' products. Their growing and legitimate concerns about the health and safety of their families and the planet are driving this demand for more genuinely "green" and sustainable goods and services.

In its 2009 report "The Seven Sins of Greenwashing," environmental marketing firm Terrachoice, noted that manufacturers and retailers are stepping up to meet the growing demand for more environmentally safe products. But, as the title of their report suggests, the dark side of this trend, "Greenwashing," continues to be a concern and possible impediment to wider adoption of greener options due to the mistrust and skepticism it creates.

The term, "Greenwashing" refers to a widely used practice of misleading consumers with deliberately vague or even false claims about the environmental benefits of a product or the environmental practices of the company who produces it. This trend stretches across a variety of industries, but is prominent in the Health and Beauty (HABA) category, where the potential for confusion regarding product claims is probably greatest.

Consider the results of another recent market research study done by The Shelton Group. Their Eco Pulse study on natural and organic label claims revealed that a surprising number of Americans (over 50% of those surveyed) erroneously believe that the term "Natural" is regulated by the government and therefore more reliable, while "Organic" is an unregulated, fancy, marketing buzzword slapped on products to justify a higher price point. Of course, this is the opposite of what's true.

With so many different standards and claims floating around out there, how can you know what to look for in your personal care products to ensure you're not being "greenwashed." Here's a brief round up of some of the types of claims you might see and how to evaluate them:

1. Natural Claims

This is the most common and the most nebulous of claims on personal care products. Since there are no regulatory standards here, you have to educate yourself as much as possible on the difference between natural and not-so-natural ingredients to decipher the claims. The main things to consider are a company or brand's track record, and hidden trade-offs with respect to the product's ingredients.

The Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database enables you to see how both companies and their individual products rank in terms of health and safety. Products with higher rankings (i.e. 7-10) generally contain a higher amount of potentially toxic chemicals and questionable ingredients. Companies whose products rank in the middle to high range should be scrutinized more carefully. Their claims of being "natural" likely involve trade-offs - meaning they may contain natural ingredients but they also contain harmful ingredients. Keep in mind that the term "natural" does not speak directly to the environmental benefits of the product or the manufacturer's environmental practices.

2. Free From Claims

Beware of "free from" claims - ones that tend to emphasize what's not in the product at the expense of what is. These can be highly misleading because they either imply that the free from ingredient is in some way undesirable when that may not be the case, or worse, the free from ingredient is one that has no relevance to either the safety of the product or its environmental impact. These types of claims can also be another way of re-directing attention from the hidden trade-offs mentioned earlier.

For example, a company that makes scented products using "fragrance" may put a "free from phthalates" claim on its label. Since the term "fragrance" is not regulated, how can you know that this claim is true? What proof is being offered to validate the claim either on the label or elsewhere? In this example the only way you can judge is if the product is still scented with "fragrance" as opposed to pure essential oils.

Obviously, products that are free from petroleum-based ingredients or synthetic chemicals are by nature going to be safer for you and more environmentally friendly, but you have to know how to read and understand the ingredient panel to determine its legitimacy.

3. Organic Claims

Market research clearly indicates that this claim doesn't currently hold much authority with the average consumer, but the increased use of organic and especially certified organic ingredients plays a critical and often overlooked part in the environmental sustainability movement. Most consumers understand the importance of buying food products that are organically grown or produced, but many have not yet made the connection to their importance in personal care products. Because most of these products are either applied directly to the skin or consumed orally, it makes perfect sense that they should also be free of pesticides. The only way to know if they are, is through some form of certification.

The waters surrounding organic certification are a little murky right now. The USDA NOP (National Organic Program) seal is the only legitimate seal currently recognized by consumers, however the standards for that seal were designed specifically for agriculture, and as such present problems with respect to its application to many personal care products.

In the absence of clearly defined standards for personal care, various industry alliances have formed to come up with their own standards to fill the void. Some of the standards that have recently emerged include OASIS (Organic and Sustainable Industry Standards), NPA (Natural Products Association), NaTrue (the National Science Foundation's standard negotiated in conjunction with European manufacturers), and COSMOS, which represents the harmonization of 6 different European certification bodies (including France's Ecocert, Germany's BDIH, and the UK's Soil Association). These are still a lot of competing (and possibly conflicting) standards to navigate, so your mileage may vary...

4. Social and Ethical Claims

The most common of these are Fair Trade and Cruelty-Free or Not Tested on Animals. At the moment Fair Trade claims on personal care products are rare as the specifics of that type of certification typically apply to agricultural products like coffee or chocolate, or products (like clothing) made from cotton or other natural fibers that are grown and harvested by farmers in poor countries.

The Cruelty-Free and animal testing claims typically apply more to cosmetics (make up) than to personal care, but often get slapped onto the latter for marketing purposes. The best way to validate this sort of claim is to look for either the Leaping Bunny seal (a program of the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics) or a Friends of PETA endorsement - either on the product itself or on the company's web site and marketing collateral. You can also verify by going directly to these sites, and searching their list of participating companies.

While certifications and endorsements play an important part in helping consumers identify products that are legitimately green and safe, we still have a ways to go before they become truly reliable. It's also important to remember that the absence of such seals doesn't mean that a product is not green or doesn't live up to its claims. Certification can often be quite costly and out of the reach of smaller companies whose whole purpose (ironically) revolves around providing truly green or natural products. In the absence of a reliable eco-label or seal, your best bet is to choose the products and companies that offer transparency, information, and education.

Personal Care Products Suited For Pregnant Women

Women are especially vulnerable during pregnancy and that is why they must take extra care of their bodies during that period of time and up until they are nursing. It is not enough that a pregnant woman stays away from alcohol or smoking, everything that has to do with her body such as eating or even proper personal care habits must be watched vigilantly as it may affect the baby.

In terms of using personal care products, a pregnant woman must place careful scrutiny over the items she chooses for the wrong personal care products might contain substances that could be harmful to her and to the baby as an after-effect. To help mothers-to-be out there who have no idea what personal care products to choose and what they should avoid and what they should look for in a product, here is a break-down of the most commonly used items by pregnant women and the substances they should and shouldn't contain.

1.) Soap - Soaps are the most commonly used product, not just by pregnant women but by everyone so the contents of the soap we use are especially important. We are exposed to it at least 5 times a week and frequent use of the wrong soap can cause harm to your skin-and to the baby for pregnant women. So what should soaps suited for pregnant women contain? Shea Butter, Palm Oil, Coconut Acid and Evening Primrose Oil or Lavender Oil, are good products to be found on a soap- ingredient list. What it shouldn't contain are Isoeugenol, Hydroxycitronellal, D&C Violet 2, Linalool, Geraniol, Limonene, Coumarin, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate and Benzone derivatives such as Oxybenzone, or Benzophenone-3, Benzyl alcohol, Paraben chemicals and Eugenol as these chemicals are known contributors to cancer, endocrine and organ system toxicity. One should also stay from soaps with added fragrances as they can contribute to skin irritation.

2.) Toothpaste - For something we put into our mouths daily, toothpaste should be especially safe. Contents like Myrrh, Water, Propolis, a Calcium Carbonate Base are good while Papain, Alumina, Propyene Glycol and Methylparaben can cause allergies, neuro and organ system toxicity as well as developmental and reproductive toxicity, which can be really harmful to the baby.

3.) Shampoo - Even shampoos can be harmful so it is good to also watch out for what you wash your hair with. Calcium Oxide, Sunflower Extract, Cinnamon scent, Rosemary Oil, Provitamin B5, Vitamin F, Wheat Proteins and Lemon are safe ingredients while shampoos containing Parabens such as BUTYLPARABEN, PROPYLPARABEN, METHYLPARABEN and Benzenes and Acids like Lactic acid, Salicylic Acid and Benzoic Acid are harmful to your hair and general health as they can cause the same health hazards such as cellular and biochemical mutation, developmental and reproductive, organ and neuro toxicity as well as certain cancers.

Careful inspection of an over the counter item's ingredient list is very important whether one is pregnant or not. With this knowledge that you now have on personal care items, you can be sure that you'll be staying away from all the harmful substances you might be putting on your body.

Buying from a credible store also helps prevent items containing suspicious ingredients from getting into your shopping cart. Make sure you are buying from a trust-worthy store before trying out any product.

Such items are the products that an individual likes to use in order to keep his mind, skin and entire body to look healthy, appealing and attractive. These products include body lotions, soaps, creams, sleeping masks, hand and face washes, shampoos, conditioners, serums, nail kits, brushes, combs, body sprays, candles, scrubs and a number of other wholesale items of daily use.

Why high margins lie in selling such wholesale products? People are becoming addicted to appear more fashionable, more stunning and more elegant. This has raised the trend of using personal care products. These products besides beautifying you also give you a satisfaction of mind that you are sparing some time for your personal care which is why, people of the modern age are inclined towards using these products. With a huge demand in market, personal care products have become the top selling items and every wholesaler tries to deal in this category of products to enlarge his profit margins. Selling large quantities of highly demanded goods is a complete profitable package for the wholesaler. What else do the wholesalers need?

As a wholesaler, you should procure personal care products from the quality suppliers, manufacturers or dropshippers because users of these products can compromise on price but they never compromise on quality. That does not mean that price does not matter at all. After all why do people demand personal care products from low cost sources? Obviously, to acquire them at amazing low cost that is affordable to them. So, these products should not have any negative affects and should be affordable for the people.

Wholesalers should try to buy those wholesale products whose expiry dates don't fall near. Dealing in the branded wholesale products is one of the most viable and profitable options available for the wholesalers because wholesale branded personal care products sell like hot cakes in the market. Personal care products have less storage cost as they have high marketability. Also wholesalers dealing in these products should keep ears and eyes on the changing trends of their usage in the market.

Educational Requirements of a Personal Care Assistant

A personal care assistant, PCA, is responsible for caring for ill individuals such as seniors, or any other person that is in need of personal care on a daily basis. To work as an assistant, there is some education and training that is needed as you are going to be working with people in a home setting. You can get this by working under the supervision of a RN or enrolling in a training program.

Overview of a PCA

As a PCA, you will be responsible for helping people who are elderly and fragile, those who are disabled, cognitively challenged, or chronically ill. You will be offering services in the comfort of the client's home as this allows them to be more comfortable. You may also be offering services to people who are in hospice care settings or other medical facilities. The point is to help people remain a part of the community and remain involved in activities. As a PCA, services are often needed when family or friends are not available.

You are going to be caring for the patient based on what their needs are. Each patient is different as well so that means each patient will need different needs. You could be doing light housekeeping to more involved tasks such as bathing them and helping them with getting dressed or using the bathroom. You could also be in charge of meal preparation and running errands. You may also need to provide the client with emotional support and mental support. You may also need to ensure that the client adheres to a special diet if needed such as diabetics.

Educational Requirements

You are going to need to have a certain amount and type of training to work as a personal care assistant. According to the BLS, you are going to need to have 16 hours of training before you can work with any client or patient. There are some places that will ask you to have more, so you should always find out what the state you plan on working in requires to ensure that all requirements are met. There are several programs that offer 75 hour training programs and these are typically taught by a RN and you will be tested in 17 various skills.

Training Overview for PCA's

You can also opt to receive training through the National Association for Hospice and Home Care. This training program ensures that you have met all requirements for your state. You are going to learn skills such as taking vital signs, changing linens, dressing patients, bathing patients, administering medication, controlling communicable diseases, and more. You will need to also receive training and certification in CPR in the case you need to administer it.

A PCA can also be considered a nursing assistant and you are going to be able to get a job rather easily as more and more people are needing the service of a personal care assistant. This can help you get into the medical field rather fast and allows you to work in a growing field.

Three Facts to Remember While Buying Personal Care Products

Personal care products are those that you need to be really careful about while purchasing than about clothes or footwear. A wrong choice can bring about results that you might not be able to find a remedy for easily. Products for skin care, pain remedies, eye and ear care, cleansers, sanitizers, etc. are some of the common items for personal care that can differ for different people. If you use the wrong type, it could result in harmful effects like rashes, itches, swellings, etc.

Purchasing personal care products therefore have to be given great attention and care. You cannot just go for any product that is available in the market. If your problem is dandruff you obviously require an anti-dandruff shampoo. However, that doesn't mean you could go to the next available shop and buy the first product you see. On top of that there are so many marketing tactics that makes it almost impossible to ignore them. Amidst all these it is not very easy to select the product that you need and that would work best for you. Here are a few tips that could help you in choosing the best and safest personal care products for you:

Know your body

Not all bodies are the same and therefore the products also will work the same way. You need to know the characteristics of your body such as the skin type, hair type, allergies, etc. This can help you in choosing the products that would not harm you or create any side effects.

Listen to the ads but don't fall for them...yet

Means of marketing products are so many today. TV, radio, Internet, billboards, print media etc. are various ways through which manufacturers would try to reach out to you. Some would promise healthy and glowing skin, some, removal of all spots and scars and some, smooth and silky hair. You could check them out, listen to what the ads tell you. Now analyse what you heard, compare with your body type and then decide which product would work.

Another factor is to double check a product when it claims to be 'natural' or 'herbal'. It is quite easy for marketers to lure customers using these terms as there is the popular belief that natural or herbal products are free of harm. Beware! Not all products that claim to be herbal are indeed completely harmless.

10 Tips For Choosing Healthy Cosmetics And Personal Care Products

The cosmetic and personal care product industry is a multi-billion dollar a year industry ... and growing. New products are coming onto the market every day.

Manufacturers play to your emotions in their advertising and packaging. They tell you their products will make you look more beautiful, younger, sexier and help you attract your perfect mate. They promise to erase blemishes, wrinkles, make your skin smoother and softer. In fact, any flaws that you see in yourself, real or imagined, there is most likely a product on the market that promises to fix it.

Can you believe all the claims you read or hear about these products? Is there really truth in advertising? Where do you find the answers to these questions? How can you really be sure that a product will do what the manufacturer says it will? And most importantly, how do you know that the products are healthy and safe to use?

Here are some things for you to look out for when choosing products you're going to use on your skin:

1. Magazine and other print ads

They're designed to make you want to buy. They promise you radiant skin, a healthy glow, age-defying skin care, purity, safe and effective products made with natural ingredients. They make the product sound so good and good for you that you just want to go out and buy it. But don't buy yet. You need more information.

2. Radio and TV ads

In 30 seconds or less, you'll hear all the wonderful benefits you'll receive from choosing their products - softer, silkier, healthier hair; smoother, younger-looking skin and more. Manufacturers spend a lot of money trying to convince you to buy their products. Don't jump up and rush to the store after seeing or hearing one of their compelling ads. They're not telling you everything you need to know.

3. Celebrity endorsements

Companies pay celebrities a lot of money to endorse their products. They hope you'll think that because the celebs say wonderful things about their products, you'll want to use them too. Don't fall for this.

4. Samples in the mail

What better way to get you to try their product than to give you a little bit to test on yourself? You get to experience first hand how the product smells, feels, lathers, absorbs, etc. Now while you may like how it smells, performs and the result you get, you still don't have enough information to assess the health and safety of the product.

5. "Natural" on the label

This suggests that the product is made of ingredients from natural sources. However, there are no industry standards for what "natural" means. The product may contain all natural ingredients, just a few natural ingredients added to a synthetic product or no natural ingredients at all.

6. "Organic" on the label

Beware of products that claim to be 95%, 90% or some other high percentage organic on the label. According to cosmetic chemist Paul Lieber, it's physically impossible for more than 30-40% of the ingredients to be organic, unless it's organic oil. Why? Because typically 60-70% of a product is water and water cannot be certified organically grown, even if it's distilled or processed with organic herbs or essential oils.

7. Hypoallergenic

This doesn't mean the product won't cause allergic reactions. There are no standards defining hypoallergenic. It just means the manufacturer believes it's less likely to cause allergic reactions. In many cases, it's not even tested; only fragrances are removed.

8. Pretty labels

Manufacturers spend a lot of money designing labels to make you think their product is natural, herbal, healthy and will do amazing things if you use it. The truth is ... the information on the front of the label doesn't tell you anything about the health and safety of the ingredients inside the package. Don't base your decision on what's on the front of the label.

9. The ingredients list

This is the most important piece of information that you absolutely must read before you buy any product. The ingredient list is where you find out if the product really contains safe and healthy ingredients or not. This is not what the manufacturers wants you to read on their labels. That's why they make it so tiny you need a magnifying glass to read it. Buy one and carry it with you in your pocket or purse. Take it out when you're trying to read that microscopic print.

10. Incomplete ingredient lists

Many companies, because of increased consumer awareness of the ingredients in skin care products, will list only the known herbal and healthy ingredients on their website or in their advertisements. If you don't read carefully, you may think that what they list is the complete list of ingredients in the product ... that is until you buy the product and read the full list of ingredients on the label. Beware of this deceptive practice.

Natural & Organic Personal Care Products - Our Heroes?

Unless you're 150 years old and keep your hearing aid turned down 95% of the time because you're tired of hearing about Britney Spears, then you have begun to understand the benefits of eating natural and organic foods. It is becoming more and more obvious that what we put in our bodies has so much to do with our health. But what about what we put on our bodies?

The most exciting products to hit the organic market in masses lately are all the new organic personal care products. For a long time scientists have understood that the skin is an excellent way absorb medications into the body. When we look at things like "Quit Smoking" patches and even all the new medications that come in the form of a patch, this makes sense to us. But as soon as we think about lotions, deodorants or even makeup, for some reason, we think the chemicals found in these products are harmless and our skin will somehow repel anything that will harm us and soak up anything that will improve our life. Well, guess what. The chemicals found in most personal care products do find their way into our body and many of them do cause trouble.

In swoops the world of organic and natural personal care products. By eliminating the harmful chemicals and replacing them with natural and organic ingredients, we stop overwhelming our body with toxic chemicals. Most people have the mindset of: Well, I used that antiperspirant...I didn't die or break out in a rash so it must be okay. It doesn't always work that way. The body is an incredible machine that is made to withstand a lot. But when you dump the same harmful chemicals into your body day after day, they can accumulate and rear their head months, or even years later.

Many of the natural and organic personal care products on the market today work just as well, if not better than the synthetic junk we've been using for decades. The body was made to operate with the help of natural and organic substances. These personal care products that are filled with man-made chemicals all have the ability to accumulate in the body. It's impossible to do everything right in a civilized world today. Just with the pollution in the air and in our water, you're going to come across toxins somewhere. But if you eliminate the chemicals from the personal care products you use every single day and make the move to more natural and organic ingredients, you reduce the strain put on the body to remove all these chemicals. Now, your body can focus on more important things like removing the junk that's stored in fat cells around your stomach. (Now, we're getting your attention.)
